Easy and Fast Shawl

Pattern by Cheryl Lambert, 2004. Initially based on, but modified a lot for the N hook, Style No. 2338-220 from Bernat's All Shawls, Leaflet 220, Copyright 1976.

Yarn: Caron Cozi 7 2.5-ounce skeins
Hook: N
Size (not stretched): 8 inches high laying on its side; band 18 inches around (stretches to 23 inches); 11.5 inches across the top circle
Gauge: 4 sc = 2 inches; 4 sc rows = 2 inches

Row 1: ch 3 loosely, join with sl st to form ring.

Row 2: ch 3, * yo, insert hook in center of ring, yo and draw up a loop 2/3 inch long, yo and pull through 3 loops on hook, ch 1 (long hdc made), repeat from * twice more, ch 2, turn (3 ch 1 spaces).

Row 3: 2 long hdc in first space (inc st made), * 1 long hdc in next space, repeat from * to last space, 1 inc st in same space, ch 2, turn (5 ch 1 spaces).

Continue working in this manner, using 1 more inc st at beg and end of every row until 35 rows have been completed (71 ch 1 spaces). Do not fasten off.

Border: Working on side (going toward ring at beg of shawl), work as follows:

Row 1: ch 2, 1 inc st in same space as last inc st, * 1 long hdc in next space, 1 inc st in next space, repeat from * to space in center of ring at beg of shawl, 3 long hdc in same space, * 1 inc st in next space, 1 long hdc in next space, repeat from * to last space, 1 inc st in same space, ch 2, turn.

Row 2: 1 long hdc in each space to first space at point of shawl, 1 inc st in same space, 1 inc st in next space at point of shawl, 1 long hdc in each space to last space, 1 inc st in same space, ch 2, turn.

Row 3: 1 long hdc in each space to first inc st, 1 inc st in space of same st, 1 long hdc in next space, 1 inc st in next space, 1 long hdc in each space to last space, 1 inc st in same space, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: 1 long hdc in each space to space before long hdc at point of shawl, 1 inc st in same space, 1 inc st in next space, 1 long hdc in each space to end of row.

Row 5: Working in sc, work 2 sc in each space around entire shawl, working 3 sc in corner spaces.

Row 6: 1 sc in first st, * ch 3, 1 sc in 3rd st of ch (picot made), skip next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join with sl st. Fasten off.
