Bill's new toy!

Bill bought himself a new toy on Friday! A new BBQ - with a side burner! He BBQs dinner so frequently (probably 3-5 times a week - even during winter!) that the grill stops working properly about every other year and is replaced.

In the photo, notice the size of the old grill (left) compared to the new grill (right). I think he thinks he's cooking for an army, but there are only 2 of us!

Well, who am I to talk!? There is enough yarn in the "craft room" that I sometimes call it the "yarn room" or my personal "yarn store".

Classic Cabled Rib Socks - Grey

Colors: Steel Hot (grey) (Bernat Sox)
Pattern: Classic Cabled Rib by Janet Rehfeldt and Mary Jane Wood
Book: Crocheted Socks! 16 Fun-to-Stitch Patterns - ISBN 1-56477-494-5 - Designs by Janet Rehfeldt and Mary Jane Wood - Copyright 2003 - Martingale & Company
Hook: D
Date: November 2005

A first pair of socks from the Crocheted Socks! 16 Fun-to-Stitch Patterns book! Even using one hook size smaller than the pattern specified (E), with my loose gauge they are a little big but make good socks for inside the house when I'm not wearing shoes. I was wearing these socks a while before this photo was taken, so they're loose and a bit dirty.

Round Pet Pad - Scrap yarns

Size: 24 inches diameter
Colors: 4-ply worsted scrap yarns
Pattern: My own
Hook: H, I
Date: November 2005

Cleo or Jasmine or sometimes Bubba or Cleo AND Jasmine together lie beside me on the couch while I crochet (when not crocheting, Cleo snuggles on my lap!). Now that the weather is colder, I wrap my lap in the lap-size couch blanket they usually sleep on. So, I decided to make a special Pet Pad just for Cleo, err, the kitties!

I crocheted two round cushion-sized mini-blankets using scrap yarn, slip stitched them together (with wrong sides facing), then added a single crochet-chain 1 row over that.

Colors: Melon, Lavender, Pastel Yellow, Spring Green, White (Lion Brand Baby Soft)

Afghan Size: 34 inches x 44 inches
Pattern: Squares
Book: Snuggle-Up Baby Afghan - Leaflet 3205 - Designs by Carole Rutter Tippett - Copyright 2000 - Leisure Arts
Hook: F

Jacket and Booties Patterns: Rainbow Set
Book: Baby's Best to Knit and Crochet - Leaflet 191 - Designs by Helen Passey - Copyright 1981 - Leisure Arts
Hook: F

The second of two layettes sets for two new babies on their way in Bill's family - both of his second cousins - one baby is due in late December/early January and the other in April. Since the first layette set seems to lean toward a girl, this set is for a boy or a girl.

Recently, Jimmy/Sarah learned they were having a boy - and I'm thinking that I may make a boy-specific layette set...or maybe not...

Scrap Lap Blanket - Color Variety

Size: 38 inches x 43 inches
Colors: 4-ply worsted scrap yarns
Pattern: My own
Hook: H, I
Date: November 2005

I had a leftover square after finishing the Blocks in Primary Colors Lap Blanket, and decided to add rows and rows of different colors and patterns to it to make another lap blanket for donation.

"Boyfriend" Cat Toy for Mom's Callie

Size: 3-5 inches x 15 inches
Colors: 4-ply worsted scrap yarn
Pattern: My own
Hook: E
Date: November 2005

A while back (months ago!) when Mom saw the "Boyfriend" cat toy I crocheted for Cleo and Jasmine (Bubba pretty much ignores it), she asked me to make one for her cat, Callie. Here it is! Cleo is testing him out! Slobber, slobber, scratch, scratch!

It is filled with short bits of yarn ends snipped off many projects (the bits that are left after hiding (weaving or tying in) the yarn ends) stuffed into the partial leg of an old nylon panty hose (knee high nylons are useful too).

Size: 35 1/2 inches x 51 1/x inches
Colors: Jockey Red, Olympic Blue, Paddy Green, Honey Gold, (Red Heart Classic), Rust (orange) (Red Heart)
Patterns: 24 blocks from the book (some with modifications by me)
Book: 200 Crochet Blocks: For Blankets, Throws, And Afghans - ISBN 1-931499-68-3 - Designs by Jan Eaton - Copyright 2004 - Interweave Press
Hook: I
Date: November 2005

I started this lap blanket in June, got all the squares done, then put it aside when the weather was too hot to have the blanket on my lap while putting it together.

Ankle Socks - Warm Colors

Colors: Paint Box (Patons Kroy Socks)
Pattern: In Your Shoes Ankle Socks by Pam, published in Crochet me
Hook: D for cuff, E
Date: November 2005

This is a great pattern! The socks fit well and are easy to make.

Colors: Cool Breeze (Sugar 'n Cream Cotton Ombre Yarn)
Pattern: My own
Hook: G
Date: October 2005

I made these "cuffs" to cover the sharp edges on the handles of my treadmill so the backs of my hands stop getting banged up. Ingenious!

Latest finished objects

I've been busily finishing crocheted projects but haven't stopped to take photos of them yet. Maybe today...maybe not, however, since the final NASCAR Nextel Cup race is today! My favorite driver, Tony Stewart, has been #1 in points since before the 10-race Chase For The Cup began!

  • Round Pet Pad for Cleo, Jasmine, Bubba (start/finish Nov. 19)
  • Scrap Lap Blanket (start Nov. 13; finish Nov. 18)
  • "Boyfriend" cat toy for Mom's Callie (start/finish Nov. 13)

  • Layette set in neutral colors (blanket, jacket, booties) for Jackie/Jason or Sarah/Jimmy (start Oct. 21; finish Nov. 2)

[November 21, 2005] Tony won! I'm such a happy camper!

Taking advantage of sale of fancy yarns

I usually use only 4-ply worsted acrylic yarn because I make a lot of lap blankets to donate. Michaels Craft Store has a sale this week (ends tomorrow) on a variety of types of fancy yarns - some are 50% off the regular price. I resisted temptation Sunday, Monday, ... until today on my way home from work.

I browsed around for about 60 minutes selecting colors (mainly purples and reds) and textures (soft, fuzzy, furry, smooth, cuddly, tickly) and brought walked out with $100 in a variety of yarn brands and types, including 6 balls of a great red-with-bits-of-black soft yarn for a sweater or something for me. I plan to use the other yarns to experiment with Freeform Crochet. Cool!

Gonna make more socks!

crochetedsocksbook.jpg
Because I enjoy wearing the ankle socks I crocheted for myself in the cool tones of Jazz Hot, I bought more Bernat Sox yarn from the Knitting-Warehouse.com so I could make striped socks in different colors and, well, just have a blast doing something fun and colorful! Two of each of these:

  • Jet Hot (black)
  • Steel Hot (grey)
  • Hippi Hot (blues, greens, pink, purple)
  • Crazy Hot (rainbow colors)
  • Denim Hot (blue)
  • Army Hot (black/greens/greys/tans)
  • Hot Tamale (green, lime green, cyan, coral, orange, pink, brown)

Too bad the cute and colorful sock patterns included on the wrappers are all for knit, not crochet.

I also couldn't resist buying Crocheted Socks! 16 Fun-to-Stitch Patterns on Amazon.com!

Look out feet!

First sample skeins

Oh, this is going to be GREAT for trying new yarns! I got my first pack of Elann sample skeins last week! 5 small skeins of different types of yarn - along with the name, weight, type, washing/drying (or not) instructions, and more info about each skein! GREAT for freeform crochet too! With the sample skeins came bits (about 3 inches) of other colors taped to piece of paper.

Since I received 5 skeins the first week (there are 5 Tuesdays in November), instead of 1, Elann must have decided to do monthly mailings instead of weekly. I imagine that it's much cheaper for them and it doesn't make a difference to me - hmmm, except I was looking forward to receiving weekly packages!

About Cheryl

Enjoys crocheting, gardening, cats, NASCAR (especially Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch!), reading, photography, snorkeling in Kailua-Kona with sea turtles, Sizzler's Mega Bacon Cheeseburgers, hot and iced decaf coffee, dark chocolate, color (yarn, fabric), playing around with web technologies - not necessarily in that order! Still very much a beginner with quilting, knitting, and sewing. Donates crocheted lap blankets.

List maker, detail-oriented, organized, leans heavily toward perfectionism. ISTJ. Libra.
