Looking for picture afghans made with granny squares?

I've been asked this question a few times, so I thought I'd create a post with the information. "Picture afghans" are blankets with charted designs (graphs) made using small (usually 2-row) crocheted granny squares. Listed below are the books / leaflets / booklets I'm aware of that have these patterns.

Go to ebay.com to buy them - I do not have these books for sale. You may have to do searches every day or so for a week or more, but you will find them eventually. The easiest book to find is "The Great Granny Crochet Book" - see #4 below for a list of the picture afghan patterns in this book.

  1. kidscovers.jpg Kid's Covers by Anis Duncan, published by Creative Hands in 1977. Difficult to find. Patterns include:
    • Playful Kittens (2 cats and a basket of yarn)
    • Summer Carousel (with 2 horses)
    • Jungle Friends (elephant, camel)
    • Butterflies
    • Magic Castle (castle with drawbridge down)
    • Circus Clown
    • Grandpa's Farm
  2. pictureafghansbyanisduncan.jpg Picture Afghans by Anis Duncan, published by American School of Needlework, Booklet 1, 1977. Difficult to find. Patterns include:
    • My Home Town
    • Wheels (cars, truck, fire truck)
    • Puddle Ducks (mama with babies)
    • The Bird Watcher (cat, birds)
    • Dutch Pinwheels
    • Party Time (teddy bear, duck, balloons)
    • Desert Sunset (cactus in desert with hills in background)
    • Summer Garden
  3. pictureafghans.jpg Picture Afghans by various designers, published by Creative Hands, booklet #411 (but that's not clear on my copy), 1981. Difficult to find. Patterns include:
    • Spring Bunny
    • Window View
    • Village Square
    • Freight Train (8 train cars)
    • Rocket Ship
    • Silent Star
  4. greatgrannycrochetbook.jpg The Great Granny Crochet Book, published by American School of Needlework, 1979, ISBN 0-930748-10-7 (hardback book). Easy to find! I've seen it on eBay many times - for very little money! In a chapter called "Picture Afghans" are these patterns:
    • Dutch Tulips
    • My Home Town
    • Supper Time (dog, bone, dog house)
    • Wheels (cars, truck, fire truck)
    • Circus Clown
    • Playful Kittens (2 cats and a basket of yarn)
    • Summer Carousel (with 2 horses)
    • The Bird Watcher (cat, birds)
    • Puddle Ducks (mama with babies)
    • Summer Garden
  5. greatafghanbookthe.jpg [Just added! December 10, 2007] The Great Afghan Book, published by American School of Needlework, (no date, but certainly in the 1970s), ISBN 0-930748-19-0 (hardback book). Another easy find on eBay! In a chapter called "Picture Afghans" are these patterns:
    • Dutch Pinwheels
    • Desert Sunset (cactus in desert with hills in background)
    • Party Time (teddy bear, duck, balloons)
    • Grandpa's Farm
    • Jungle Friends (elephant, camel)
    • Magic Castle (castle with drawbridge down)
    • Butterflies
    • Ship of Dreams (sailboats)
    • Tulip Quilt

Another idea is to use graph paper to design a custom chart using squares and half squares. A do-it-yourself picture afghan!

My wife is interesting buy a copy of....

Kid's Covers, published by Creative Hands, designer: Anis Duncan, 1977 (includes Playful Kittens, Summer Carousel (with 2 horses), Jungle Friends (elephant, camel), Playful Kittens, Butterflies, Magic Castle, Circus Clown, Grandpa's Farm,)

She has one from 1979, it is marked and she needs a new one. Is it still in print? Any information you can offer will provide me some level of domestic tranquility.

Best Regards
RGP (Husband)

Hi, Suely, Kid's Covers is not in print anymore. It can be found occasionally on eBay, so you could try there. An alternate is The Great Granny Crochet Book, published by American School of Needlework, 1979, ISBN 0-930748-10-7 (hardback book). It is easy to find - I've seen it on eBay many times - for very little money! It has a chapter on Picture Afghans that includes many of the patterns in Kid's Covers and additional patterns.

Thank you! I have been looking for these picture afghan patterns for years. I had a copy of Kids Covers which I lost in a move/divorce, and really wanted to make them for my first two grandchildren. I really appreciate this information. Thank you very, very much!

Sincerely, Betsy Brewster

Hello and happy holidays,

I was wondering if you could possibly email me the graphs for Anis Duncan's picture afghans. I have searched for 2 years with no luck in finding them. I will be glad to pay a fee for this if you require it.

Thanks so much

Hi, Maria - I am sensitive to copyright issues and cannot photocopy the patterns for you. However, Picture Afghan patterns by Anis Duncan are in these two hardback books which are regularly available on eBay.com:

1. The Great Granny Crochet Book, published by American School of Needlework, 1979, ISBN 0-930748-10-7
2. The Great Afghan Book, published by American School of Needlework, (no date, but certainly in the 1970s), ISBN 0-930748-19-0

A list of the Picture Afghans in each book is available on my blog entry here.

Cheryl,
I have looked for the book Kid’s Covers from Creative Hands for about two years now. My mother had it and made several Afghans for all the grandkids, and I wanted to make some for my grandkids. She loaned hers out and the person who borrowed it of course, cannot find it. Do you have any leads on where I might find one? If I had the pattern for the squares (and half/half colored squares) I could even make my own pictures.
Thanks,
Linda

Hi, Linda - These 2 books contain the patterns that are in the Kid's Covers booklet:

1. The Great Granny Crochet Book, published by American School of Needlework, 1979, ISBN 0-930748-10-7
2. The Great Afghan Book, published by American School of Needlework, (no date, but certainly in the 1970s), ISBN 0-930748-19-0

For a list of picture afghan patterns in each book, see my blog post - items #4 and #5.

Both are much more easily found on eBay.com than the Kid's Covers booklet.

looking for a baby afghan pattern from around 1978. it was a kit from Hershhner's called baby elegance. lost pattern. have never been able to locate. it was started off in a cathedral arch motif. each color added. panels made of 7 and then sewn together?

ever heard or seen?

I just saw two copies of the Kid's Covers on e-bay, and I was lucky enough to win one of them. There were also about 3 other posts of patterns that are the picture granny squares. I have looked for years for the castle in this one booklet and am so happy to have found it. Wish I could copy it but I know how it is. Good luck, keep looking. This is the best site for information on the picture afghans.

Hi, AuntPatt - That's great! I'm glad you found what you had been looking for.

I am very interested in the kids covers and the picture afghans books. Do you still have any of them for sale. I have been searching for these for years.....Thanks

Hi, Nelda - You can get them on ebay.com - you may have to search for them every day or two for a while, but they *are* listed. Or, you can buy "The Great Granny Crochet Book" and "The Great Afghan Book" which have quite a few granny square picture afghans. These books and the picture afghan patterns are listed in my blog post:
http://www.tamemymind.com/blog/2007/11/04/looking-for-picture-afghans-made-with-granny-squares.php

Love your afghan patterns. The Flower Picture Quilt has caught my eye -- that means more yarn purchases. So many patterns, so little life! An idea for those who may be interested is www.happyyellowhouse.com for many free picture quilt patterns. Lovely site -- as is yours!
All the best! Sincerely, CathyinPEI (Home to "Anne of Green Gables")

Thank you, Cathy! Hiding all the yarn ends for small granny squares is so time consuming! But the results can be great!

Just wanted to add another book for you that has two picture afghans - The Great Crochet Gift Book,ISBN 0806968966,1988,by American School of Needlework. Rocket And Window View. And, thanks again for doing all the work listing the pic afghans, I have been able to track down many of these books, all used and at a decent price.

I have many of the pattern books listed here. What I really need is a granny square picture afghan pattern with a jeep. (Yes I have the one with cars and trucks)

I have the picture afghans book the one with the trains on the front...got it at a yard sale for 25 cents..woo hoo...

But I would like to use these to make the Nascar logo but with my major pain issues (long story) I cant seem to wrap my brain around it...if anyone can help please let me know.

Hi, Angela - Here's a chart I made of the NASCAR logo. Each square would be a 2-row granny square. Of course, you'd need to add squares (alternating black and white squares would be great!) to make it wider.

I was looking for more picture afghans. They seem scarce. I have several and am willing to
share. Anyone needing to find one may e mail me.
